TEXTVEERER: (OED Def (maybe?): A person who moves from out of his current lane whilst driving on a public road, either veering towards the hard shoulder, or the outer lane, or into the side of the road of oncoming traffic, whilst carrying out the act of TEXTing on his/her mobile phone.
The act of using 2 lanes whilst being completely unaware of doing so. A TEXTVEERER
A Textveer : the act of a moving vehicle VEERING due to the vehicle's occupier simultaneously driving and typing a text message into his mobile
(Note, the use of the word "HE" in this blog means HE AND/OR SHE)
"Look love... did you see that? The car in front just had a TEXTVEER!...... the moron!"
"I'm sorry officer, it would appear that my car collided with the central reservation, mid TEXTVEER"
"Hi Mum...Thought I'd better phone you on my hands free... had a TEXTVEER a couple of minutes ago...."
"I have to talk - I don't want to be TEXTVEERING all over the place!!!"
OK... It's a made up word. I made it up. I have carried out an intensive study using such tools as... err.... Google... and can categorically state that the word TEXTVEER does NOT exist. Nor does ANY word exist that defines the act of being out of control of a moving vehicle due to the simultaneous use of the SMS Facility of one's mobile phone.
THEREFORE WE AT STRANGECARROTS PROPOSE THAT THIS WORD BE BROUGHT INTO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE WITHOUT FURTHER ADO!
What is, after all, easier to say:
1. "Look, that car just veered into the other lane because the driver was texting on his mobile!"
2. "Look... a TEXTVEER!"
Is there really any need for an argument here ?
A Textveer.... I saw 3 whilst driving home yesterday.... I wanted to text my wife to let her know, but fortunately, avoided self textveering as I had left my mobile at home - yes... the whole day... it felt like I had lost a limb !!!! I'll move on quickly, before I get sad again thinking about it...
I do enough driving to be able to determine when a possible texveer is imminent. One sees a lot of general veering on the roads - usually by the little 84 year person who can barely see over the steering wheel....You can usually see them through their rear window and judge the situation and be ready to accept a possible veering. One expects that now and again and one can take steps to avoid accordingly....
The one major warning of an impending TEXTVEER is by noticing - again via the car in front's rear window, or even by observing the occupier of the vehicle in front via his rear view mirror - The subtle yet obvious tilted head.... as if driving whilst looking at his shoes, the occasional nod of the head upward - to check there is nothing stationary in front of him - like a lorry! If he's right handed, you will also notice a small (TINY actually) shoulder movement - this happens.... Go on.. text something now and you'll see I'm right !!!It's enough for me to spot.... SO.. one's defences must come up.... First and foremost, stay behind him! He cannot TEXTVEER into the side of you.... cunning eh??
Secondly.... drop back 20 yards/metres... keep your distance - no matter how good a driver the texter thinks he is, there is ALWAYS scope for a textveer..
OK... I won't re-invent the wheel but I WILL add the following link for you to take a look at (IF you want) to help try to understand how dangerous Texting and Driving is. (Hmmmmmm.... "Texting and Driving" : why is there not just ONE word for that ???
From the article it states : "Around half of British drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 text while driving, the RAC Foundation said.
"When texting, drivers are distracted by taking their hand off the wheel to use their phone, by trying to read small text on the phone display and by thinking about how to write their message," said Dr. Nick Reed, TRL senior human factors researcher. "This combination of factors resulted in the impairments to reaction time and vehicle control that place the driver at a greater risk than having consumed alcohol to the legal limit for driving."
So then.... HALF of the drivers between the ages of 18 and 24.... HALF!!!!
That's quite a lot when you think about it!!
BUT... Being on a busy motorway, I see a lot of bumps and much worse too.. and my first thought (nowadays) is "Silly... I'll bet you were Texting and you suffered a major Textveer"... Ok... I made the last bit up - Come on, I only made the word up yesterday !!!!!
So people.... I am not a driving policeman... you can do what you like when you're driving....BUT.... I WILL complain however, when you do something, other than driving, whilst driving, and you do it right by me !
And remember, DON'T TEXTVEER !!!!!!!!
I'm Andy. I try to make interesting Digital Art. Thank you.
